Inspired by The Gambia: The Colors Behind Jarga’s Bajen Collection

At Jarga, inspiration is never far away. One of the main reasons it was a no-brainer to move our handbag production to The Gambia is because this country is alive with beauty, culture, and creativity. Everywhere you look, there’s a story to be told and a detail to be cherished.

From the golden coastline to the vibrant markets, from the rich flavors of Gambian food to the lush greenery during the rainy season, The Gambia is a canvas of endless inspiration. The rainy season especially has a magic of its own. The sky turns into a clear bright blue, the earth becomes vibrant, and the green is greener than ever. It’s a season that breathes life into everything, including our designs.

When creating our Bajen collection, the colors weren’t chosen at random. They are a reflection of The Gambia itself:

The bold yellow echoes the sunsets along the coast. But also the mangoes, the bananas and the pineapples.

The deep green reflects the thriving nature during rainy season. The threes, the grass, the okra and the lime!

The bright orange is inspired by the energy of local markets. From the Papaya, to the kabba!

The cool blue mirrors the endless skies and rivers and the soft pink carries the warmth and calm that is so present in Gambian life.

Every bag in the Bajen collection carries a piece of this country. More than just accessories, they are cultural translations, designed to be worn anywhere in the world, but always rooted in home.

The Bajen Bu Ndaw mini bag, for instance, is not just a statement piece. It’s a reminder that African craftsmanship and luxury belong on the global stage. Each piece is carefully handmade in The Gambia, combining world-class standards with cultural storytelling.

For us, fashion is more than what you wear, it’s about carrying meaning. And for Jarga, that meaning comes from The Gambia, a country that continuously reminds us that beauty can be found in every corner, if only we stop to look.
